Is there electricity?
There is no electricity in the accommodations. They are illuminated at night with propane lamps. You will be unable to use any small electrical appliances like hair dryers, curling irons, or razors. There are no fans or air conditioning in the rooms. If you want to read at night, you will need to bring a book light with you. There is limited outdoor lighting so you will need to carry a flashlight or use a headlamp at night. Candles and oil lamps are prohibited at camp, please do not bring them to the camp.

Is there phone/internet/wifi? Will my cell phone work?
There is no cell service or internet at Far Horizons. We do have a ground line. In fact, you will begin to loose service once you enter the park. We’ll have an emergency phone to use (in-calls and out).

Please share this information with those back home that might need, for any reason, to get a hold of you while you are away. Make sure they know to leave your name, their name, and a contact number.

Can I request a specific roommate?
On the second page of the registration form, under options, you will be prompted to list the names of anyone you wish to share accommodations with. If you have no preference, simply leave the field blank.

Can I bring my pet?
We are very sorry, but we don’t allow pets on the grounds in consideration of others and the wildlife.

What time is check in/out?
Check-In time is 12 noon. Check-Out time is 10am.

Is there a separate rate for children?
Children, under the age of 5 are free and ages 6-17 pay only $35 per night with the registration of a paying adult in any of our programs. Children are not permitted to participate in the programs without the express consent of the program instructor.

What is the food like?
The fare is hearty and nutritious vegetarian comfort food.

May I bring drugs or alcohol?
Drugs and alcohol are not permitted on Far Horizons grounds. Anyone using or in procession of any illegal substances will be escorted from the grounds and may face legal consequences.

Is it safe to leave valuables in my room?
All rooms lock, however, we recommend that you do not bring any unnecessary personal items with you. Far Horizons will not be responsible for any items lost, damaged or stolen while staying with us. It is also a good idea to label your items to avoid accidental confusion or mix-ups with other people’s property.

When are meal times? What if I have a food allergy?
Three meals a day are provided in exchange for your service. Meals are served at 8am, noon, and 6pm. The fare is vegetarian. On the first page of our reservation system, we ask about food restrictions or allergies. Please provide detailed information. If need be we will contact you for additional clarification or to discuss your dietary needs further.

What is your cancellation policy?
If you cancel or change any part of your reservation at least two (2) weeks before the start of your workshop(s), the balance will be refunded, less a $25-per-workshop fee, per-person processing fee. If you cancel a workshop with less than two weeks notice, you will receive a credit to be used at another Far Horizons program the same year or the following year.

Should I worry about altitude sickness?
Most cases of altitude sickness are caused by dehydration. Please pack a reusable water bottle and carry it with you while visiting the park. Make a point of drinking frequently throughout your visit.

Are bears an issue?
Black bears are a critical part of the park ecosystem. For the safely of our guests and the wild bears, please respect the park guidelines on bear encounters.

What is the nearest airport?
The nearest airports are Visalia Municipal Airport – Visalia CA (VIS/KVIS), which is about 60 miles away and Fresno Yosemite International Airport – Fresno, CA (FAT/KFAT), about 100 miles away.

Packing List

What should I pack?
Please bring a flashlight. Plan on packing clothing for both warm and cold weather. Because of the center’s high altitude, the weather can be changeable, and the evenings are often cool. Other important items include a reusable water bottle, flashlight/headlamp, bug repellant, yoga mat, musical instruments, books, art supplies, a camp chair, rechargeable batteries, and a spirit of adventure.
